Danish Pine Bookcases by Mogens Koch for Rud. Rasmussen
Mogens Koch for Rud Rasmussen, modular bookcase, pine, Denmark, designed in 1928
Modularbook case by Danish designer Mogens Koch. This piece is constructed from different elements to create this lovely set up.
Mogens Koch was born in Copenhagen in 1898. After completing his studies at the architecture school at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts he worked under architects Carl Petersen and Kaare Klint for nearly a decade. Koch was already very familiar with Klint - he had founded the academy’s furniture school in 1924 where he taught a rigorous approach to design considering human body measurements, historical furniture precedents and architectural proportions. Koch became one of Klint’s most loyal students and collaborators. The relationship was formative: Koch absorbed Klint’s methodology and continued to apply it for the rest of his career.
In 1928 Koch introduced his most enduring design: his modular bookcase system. The system was conceived with several principles: modularity, flexibility, architectural sensibility, and integrity of material. In 1934 Koch opened his own studio and also began teaching, following in the tradition of Klint. At the Royal Danish Academy he helped train a generation of designers who would define Danish modernism after World War II. His teaching reinforced empirical design methods, respect for craft traditions, and clarity of form. When Mogens Koch died in 1992, he left a legacy that is less about a single aesthetic and more about a design methodology. His influence today is largely threefold: Koch preserved and extended the analytical design tradition started by Kaare Klint, whose methodology still largely underpins Danish furniture education. Koch’s Enduring Bookcase System, the MK modular bookcase is one of the longest continuously produced furniture systems in modern design. Koch’s reputation rests on system thinking. Today many modular furniture systems trace conceptual lineage back to Koch’s work.
Historians, architects, and collectors recognize him as one of the most disciplined thinkers within the Danish modern tradition. He is remembered both for individual designs and his systematic approach to design.
