George Nakashima Walnut and Brass Monumental Cabinet for Widdicomb

In July of 1957, two preeminent American furniture manufacturers, Widdicomb Furniture Company and Mueller Furniture merged to form Widdicomb-Mueller. A year later the company introduced a line by the designer and woodworker George Nakashima. The line, which consisted of 60 works produced at modest scale, was celebrated from the launch and remains a cornerstone of masterful American mid century design. For the collection Nakashima selected particularly beautiful wood: East Indian Laurel, Carpathian Elm, Black Walnut and Rosewood. Widdicomb-Mueller's craftsmen handmade the line with the same techniques as the Nakashima studio as specified by the designer.
