Pair of sling chairs model 248 designed by sculptor Clement Meadmore in 1963 for Leif Wessman Associates, New York. Constructed of leather and steel.
Clement Meadmore was an Australian-born designer and sculptor renowned for his ability to merge industrial materials with sculptural modernism during the postwar era. Trained in industrial design in Melbourne before relocating to New York in the 1960s.
In 1963 Clement Meadmore introduced the iconic cantilevered, leather Sling Chair. Constructed from a polished chrome-plated steel frame with a suspended leather sling seat, the chair embodied Meadmore’s sculptural approach to furniture design while maintaining comfort and simplicity.
The Sling Chair was later included in the notable exhibition 'Recent Acquisitions: Design Collection' at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1967 and added to its permanent collection, cementing its importance within twentieth-century design.
